Ghazals and Nazm

Ghazals and Nazm – both are known forms of Urdu poetry. They compliment to each other. Both forms of poetry show similarities but infact there is a significant difference which distinguishes these two forms of poetry.

Nazm displays a smooth flow of rhyme and rhythm and is written in verses. These verses are usually in continuity to maintain a flow of thought. Ghazals can show independent meaning in verses there can be change in the display of next verse. Nazm usually displays love in its topic. The whole focus of poetry is around description of love. Many famous singers popularized ghazals in Indian subcontinent. Hindi films in India and Urdu films in subcontinent spread the liking amongst common man for this form of poetry. Mirza Ghalib - A very famous Urdu poet of the 18th century, was known for his Ghazals. A TV serial in his name made his Gazals famous in Indian households. He penned down many romantic ghazals in his time. Other poets who wrote Ghazals are Rumi, Hafez and Muhammad Iqbal. Now Ghazals are being written in other languages as well. Many Indian regional language Ghazals are becoming popular.  In recent times the use of Ghazals in TV serials and music albums has amplified. Ghazals writers in other languages are also emerging. The burgeoning communities of Ghazal writers are unable to find a good platform to showcase their literal abilities. Promoting all forms of poetry on new media

Poetry readings can take place anywhere - coffeehouses, college auditoriums, concert venues, public places or even in someone's courtyard. Regardless of the venue, poetic symposium is an literal event.

Mushaira is a term in Urdu used to describe an event also called as mehfil in local parlance. it is a poetic symposium where poets gather to perform their works. A mushaira is popularly belived as beloved part of the culture of Indian Subcontinent but in fact has a worldwide following wherever descendants of Indian orgin have settled. A Mushaira is greatly admired by participants as a forum for free self-expression.

A mushaira can have various forms of poetry like Doha, Geet, Gazal, Nazm etc. One of the best form of Mushaira is ‘bait bazi' - a game using urdu poetry. Traditionally, the ghazal is the specific poetic form employed, either recited or sung, but other forms of poetry, recitation and song may be allowed also. The poetry is often humorous in nature. Invited guest poets will usually be seated behind a long table at the front of the room, with often the most admired of them seated in the centre. One person will host the mushaira, inviting each poet to come and perform. However, the form is relatively free, and anyone can come forward and ask to perform. The host usually lets the most admired poet present be the last to perform.
Ghazal originated in Iran in the 10th century A.D. It grew from the Persian qasida, which in verse form had come to Iran from Arabia. The ghazal came to India with the advent and extension of the Muslim influence from the 12th century onwards. The Moghuls brought along with them Iranian culture and civilization, including Iranian poetry and literature. When Persian gave way to Urdu as the language of poetry and culture in India, the ghazal, the fruit of Indo-Iranian culture, found its opportunity to grow and develop.

Emerging technologies and existing new media promise to provide ever more powerful opportunities for audiences to access poetry. Untill now access to books for everyone was through library but with New Media has provided access to all varieties literal art to everyone with access to technology. It began with devices like Sony Reader and lateron saw a sharp rise in use of the Kindle and subsequently iPhone which has now increased the use of e-book.

In the late 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th century, mushaira was the only avenue of entertainment and creativity in the upper classes. With the advent of social media, various forums have emerged on internet which promotes hindi/urdu poetry/shayeri.

Ghazals is the most popular form of Urdu poetry. Indian films and many private albums popularise Ghazals worldwide. A Ghazal  is a set of couplets or sher, which is sung as a short song. It is just a musical recitation of a poem. It said to have originated as early as in 10th century Persian poetry and is highly influenced by Arabic and Persian forms of literature. Ghazals are written prominently in Urdu but many Ghazals have been composed in Hindi as well.

Nazm is another popular form of Urdu poetry. Nazm in Urdu language is basically a form of poetry that has a smooth flow of rhyme and rhythm and is written in verses. These verses are usually in continuity to maintain a flow of thought, unlike Ghazals, in which verses have their independent meaning and can portray feelings independently without depending on the next of verses. According to wikipedia Azmatullah Khan (1887-1923) is believed to have introduced this format to Urdu Literature. One favorite topic of writing a nazm is love. Love can be called the central theme of Urdu poetry.
